Everybody knows that spiders can be a nuisance if they get inside your home, but did you realize they could cause a recall by a major automotive manufacturer? It seems that one of the most common spiders in the United States, the yellow sac spider, is attracted to hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons entice the spider to enter the vent hose of some Mazda6 models and weave a web. These webs clog the canister vent lines causing loss of pressurization and ventilation problems. This could stress a car’s fuel tank to the breaking point, which could make it leak fuel and possibly catch fire.
This development prompted a recall of approximately 65,000 vehicles in the U.S., Mexico and Canada in 2011. The yellow sacs are back, which has forced Mazda to recall its vehicles once more. Spider pest control is difficult. They’re very tenacious whether in a house or hidden in the hose of a car. The only option Mazda had was to check the canister vent lines and replace the parts that were affected. Another 42,000 vehicles are expected to be recalled this time.
In this case, spider extermination is the wrong approach. In newer models, Mazda has installed a spring to prevent the spiders from getting in the vent lines. If they manage to enter, however, Mazda also upgraded the software to reduce the pressure on the fuel tank to prevent splitting.
Alpha Ecological handles spider extermination regularly. We’re more environmentally friendly than most extermination companies that apply industrial-strength pesticides that can have health consequences for pets and children. We use the mildest pesticide possible – if we use any pesticide at all – for spider pest control. We prefer a method of prevention, client education and frequent examination to solve household problems. We’d rather eradicate the problem before the spiders can cause any damage to your home or harm to your family.
Give Alpha Ecological a call. We’ll send one of our technicians over to assess your problem right away.
